Early Experience 早期经历 It seems that Gloria started being a victim rather early in her career. Her pregnancy and delivery were uneventful, but problems were not long in coming. Early feeding was reported as difficult and full of tension for her mother. Gloria was breast-fed for about eight months, but apparently it was a difficult time for both mother and child. There is some question about the seriousness of the mother's impairment. There is one report to the effect that she suffered a postpartum depression. It is not clear how severe this may have been. She was not hospitalized, although she received some psychiatric treatment. There is little question, however, that she was markedly depressed during this period and that the demands of caring for her infant aroused considerable feelings of anxiety and inadequacy. From a relatively bad start it pursued an uncertain course. From the reports that we can gather, Gloria seemed to have been an active child, and rather bright. She was continually getting into mischief. Mother was unable to cope effectively with this activity. She would respond with impatience and irritability. Her usual tactic was to threaten Gloria with some kind of abandonment. When Gloria would do something that her mother found herself unable to tolerate or cope with, mother would threaten to send Gloria away, even going so far as to pick up the telephone and place a simulated call to the orphanage. The threat of abandonment is perhaps the most terrifying to a young child, and Gloria's mother exploited it to the utmost.
