In the several months prior to these events, Gloria had run an increasingly deteriorating course, but the deterioration really extended over a period of at least two years. If we go back in her story to her senior year in high school we can trace some of the events involved in this pattern of deterioration. It was at that time that Gloria first met Peter. This was the first and only serious involvement with a boy that Gloria had experienced. He was somewhat older than she and was quite conflicted and troubled in his own right. Gloria met him through her younger sister, Gladys. Gladys thought he was somebody special and exciting, and Gloria seems to have followed along in her sister's perception of him. Gloria became quite attached to him. She went out with him frequently and they apparently spent a considerable amount of time together. She referred to this as "going steady," but it was not clear that Peter was not also seeing other girls—although Gloria only suspected this. It appears that the strongest tie in the relationship, in fact, was their talking about Peter's problems and conflicts. There was some necking and kissing, and toward the end of the relationship some pressure from Peter for intercourse.
The relationship was a difficult one for Gloria to handle. She had always been extremely shy and had a great deal of difficulty in relating to boys. The relationship with Peter was a different experience for her. It lasted until the end of her freshman year at college. At that point Peter went off on a summer vacation. After several weeks he called Gloria to tell her that he had married an older woman, a divorcee he had met on his vacation. The shock of this revelation was severe for Gloria. The relationship had become a serious one for her. She had been thinking of marriage, and trying to decide whether, when Peter returned, she would allow herself to have intercourse with him. All of these were trying decisions for her—but her hopes were dashed.
While this relationship was developing, Gloria was having considerable difficulty in other areas of her life. She had graduated from high school and enrolled at a large sidewalk university near her home. Her experience there was an extremely unhappy one. She became increasingly afraid to travel on the bus to school, afraid of being injured on the street, afraid that people were laughing at her, talking about her, thinking terrible things about her. She was totally unable to make any new friends at the university or to get to know her classmates. She avoided people, kept away from them, avoided talking to them. Her ideas of reference became more and more a disturbing part of her experience. She developed delusional ideas that people wanted to kill her or rape her. From time to time she had suicidal ideas and wanted to kill herself.
In the face of this decompensation and its isolating effects, she clung all the more desperately to Peter. When the news of his betrayal came, she was crushed. She became severely depressed and withdrawn. It became impossible for her to return to school, so she dropped out. It was amazing in the face of the accumulating difficulties that she was able to maintain a solid average grade standing, even though her ability to study was severely compromised. At this point she did nothing but sit around the house, staying in her room much of the time, sleeping long hours, and in general keeping herself quite withdrawn and isolated. It seems quite clear in retrospect that she was struggling with a paranoid psychosis at this point.
Finally at her parents' urging she got a job as a secretary. Her ability to work was apparently quite adequate and for a time she seemed to be doing well at her job. But she felt increasingly pressured, felt that the boss was making too many demands on her, and felt increasingly that she would not keep up the pace. Her relationships with her employer and fellow employees also gradually deteriorated. Finally she began to feel increasingly paranoid about the job, had a fight with the boss and quit. After a short interval she tried another job, which was less demanding. Again she did well for a short while, and then the difficulties developed. Finally, she quit her job and became severely withdrawn, staying in the house by herself, sleeping and staying in bed for days at a time.
