College Years 大学时光 College years were perhaps the fullest and happiest in Henry's life. He was supported by his aunt and uncle but spent very little time with them. His grades were average, and he was socially active. Summers were spent working, usually at a resort hotel where he followed the routine for college boys, waiting on tables, doing odd jobs, teaching daughters of well-to-do client how to sail or play tennis. Sexual contacts were frequent enough. Henry had a way of getting himself sexually involved with girls rather quickly, usually for only one or two night stands. He felt an intense need to be close to a woman and to be loved and taken care of by her. Sally was from an Italian Catholic family. She had led a rather sheltered life, had never lived anywhere but with her family, and was quite dependent on her parents. When he announced his intention of marrying her, there was a big flap from his aunt and uncle. They objected strongly to her Catholicism and raised all sorts of arguments about birth control. Even though the family felt strongly about it, Sally had no qualms about birth control. They finally married, but Henry's resentment and anger at his aunt and uncle were deep. They gave him plenty of bad advice, but little money or support. They remained critical of and hostile to Sally. Henry recalls that one day on the way to church his uncle made a crack to the effect that Sally's wearing a veil in church was hypocrisy. Henry was furious with his uncle, but felt that he couldn't say anything.
