Father's Desertion
Henry's mother's death signaled the dissolution of the family. His father took the two boys to live with his brother Clem and his wife. He literally turned the boys over to them to raise, and he disappeared. Henry felt abandoned and rejected by his father, and it did not seem unlikely that there was some reality to this impression. Henry's father was a severely disturbed man. His relationships with his family were intensely ambivalent. His tantrums and violent rages, so easily provoked and often inappropriate, as well as so explosive and destructive, seemed to have a psychotic quality about them. In any case he took the first opportunity to dump his sons. The effect on Henry was profound. He felt as though he were totally abandoned—he had lost both mother and father. In the loss of his mother he felt that he had taken away from him the one person in the whole world who cared anything about him. The rejection and abandonment by his father only intensified and completed the sense of loss. He recalled wistfully that his father cried when he left. But he added with a note of considerable regret and sadness that his father made the biggest mistake of his life when he left Henry and his brother with his aunt and uncle. Father would occasionally visit, and Henry always hoped desperately that he would take him away with him so that his family could be reunited. But he never did.
Not long after, Henry's father remarried. He had moved to another part of the country and started another family. This raised hopes in Henry's mind that perhaps his father would want to try to put the family together again. He begged to be able to rejoin his father. This possibility was resisted for a time, presumably because of his father's reluctance and resistance. Finally a visit was arranged. What Henry found was disappointing. His father was as brutal and tyrannical as ever. He was as harsh and mean to his new wife as he had been to Henry's mother. Larry visited at the time and he and Henry talked about their father. Larry observed that his father did not seem to have learned anything at all. He was cruel, difficult, and hateful as ever. Henry's disappointment was severe. He felt excluded, rejected, unloved by his father and unwanted. It seems reasonable to presume that these were indeed the father's sentiments. Henry held out a slender hope of reunion, however, until his stepmother got pregnant. That signaled the final exclusion. Father had a new family and Henry was not part of it.
