Themes 主题 This first session revealed a considerable amount. She was obviously anxious, and in her anxiety many of her pervasive concerns were manifested. She was guarded and worried about the problem of having to submit in the analysis, but yet at the same time worried about offending me or hurting my feelings. The comment on the "van Gogh"print on my wall reflected her need to see the analysis as something special and valuable. Her references to the suicidal woman in the television program and the remarkable similarities to her own difficulties suggested the underlying depression with which she was struggling. It also enunciated themes which were to work themselves out through the course of the analysis, particularly the theme of individual difficulties as opposed to social and cultural expectations, as well as the parallel theme of internal conflicts as opposed to external forces. Karen was unsure whether she would have to accept the blame for her problems herself or whether she would cast the blame on circumstances and persons in her environment. She portrayed herself as the disadvantaged victim of things that had happened around her. She was able to focus this particularly in relationship to her parents, focusing on her mother's role as the martyr in the family and on mother's capacity for eliciting guilt in her. She also made it clear that she was very upset about things that had happened to her father, and immediately placed these calamities in conjunction with her own taking money from her parents. Particularly noteworthy was her resistance to the notion of the unconscious and to that of penis envy. She felt deeply concerned about any theoretical imposition which the analysis or the analyst might make upon her which would reduce her to some lesser common denominator.
