Pathogenic Relationships 致病关系 The upshot of these interactions was that Bob was forced to introject the pathological aspects of both parents. His relations with neither parent were successful—and they left him with unfulfilled needs on both sides that he continually sought to satisfy and which were doomed to unfulfillment. He sought the mother and his once-treasured symbiotic closeness to her in his relationships with a procession of women, with none of whom he could establish a loving relationship and with none of whom he could accept the procreative responsibility. His near psychotic denial of his own potency and paternity in so many of these relationships bears testimony to his inability to accept this aspect of mature love relatedness. Moreover, in relationship to the authoritative males in his environment, he continually sought to create the relationship to the idealized father—strong, capable, knowledgeable, skilled, and respected—that he sought as a child and was always denied. The rehearsal of the Oedipal drama was, however, here too, inexorable. However much he sought the idealized father, he inevitably turned him into the rejecting, hostile, and devaluing father of his childhood. The need for these defensive and conflicting introjects—born on the one hand out of his symbiotic dependence on his mother and on the other hand out of his desperate longing for closeness to his father—deprived his ego of the necessary conditions for meaningful and constructive identifications which the development of the ego requires. Ego development, therefore, was impaired, and remained fixed at the level of the defensive organization of the introjects. Any further integration of ego and superego functions was short-circuited. Reflecting this inner impairment, the quality of his object-relations was similarly affected. He was unable to progress in his object-relations beyond a symbiotic clinging to a mother-substitute—despite the superficial hypersexuality—or beyond the anal-sadistic and fear-laden struggle with father-substitutes.
