Family Background 家庭背景 Clare was the oldest of four siblings in her family. She was just four years old when her younger brother was born. He was followed a year later by another girl, Jenny. The youngest sibling was Ed, who was just ten years younger than Clare. The older brother was the one of her siblings that Clare felt closest to. She recalls that when they were playing as children, the alliance was always she and Fred aligned against her sister Jenny. She regarded him as a relatively calm and stable individual who had done reasonably well in school. She remarked, however, that he liked to draw horrible and gory pictures. Jenny demonstrated a strong capacity for self-destructive behavior. At one point her mother was after her to stop smoking and Jenny would burn her arms with the cigarette butts in defiance. She also attempted to scratch or cut her wrists on several occasions. Clare saw him as somehow different from the other siblings. She felt that he had been raised differently. Her father never punished or beat Ed, but talked to him and seemed to be more understanding in his regard. Clare herself took a very protective and caring—almost maternal—attitude toward him.
