The specifics of the metapsychology of the self remains to be spelled out, particularly in the area of the relationship between the self-system and the constitutive agencies of the psychic apparatus. What is clear at this point is that the self functions as an intersystemic referent for the psychic agencies, serves to represent and express their content and relations, and is intimately connected with the vicissitudes of narcissism. The point that we are concerned with, however, at the present juncture, is the influence of the introjective components on the formation of the self. It seems reasonable to assume from the evidence that we have already examined that the introjective processes in these paranoid patients throw a particular light on the dynamics of the self and its emergence. We will have more to say about the introjective aspects of the self in our consideration of the genetic aspects of the paranoid process. But at this point it may be useful to point out the ways in which the defensive implementation of introjection influences the formation of a self-image and a self-system within these patients.

Our emphasis on this point is limited to the appreciation that introjection is an essential dimension of the process of self-formation. Here again the understanding of both introjection and the self-system itself are matters of central moment. From one point of view introjection can be discussed in terms of its representational implications; that is to say that one can think of introjection in terms of the translations of object-representations or aspects of these into self-representations. But it seems to me that the representational view leaves out of consideration the structural reality of the self-system itself and substitutes a consequence of a formation of such a system for the system itself. Consequently introjection cannot simply mean the translation of representations, but must imply something which involves a structural effect on the internal psychic organization.
