Under the pressure of castration anxiety, the little boy is motivated to renounce these dangerous wishes and thus to surrender the Oedipal attachments to the mother. Correspondingly, the little girl follows a somewhat different path. Her infantile attachment to the mother is contaminated by her discovery at the threshold of the Oedipal situation of phallic differences. Her resentment against the mother for having sent her into the world "scarce half made up," with inferior genital equipment, drives her to seek compensation from attachment to the penis-bearing father.
